Digital Engagement

Getting more out of human computer interaction in organisations

Digital Engagement™ is TEG's proprietary approach to helping our clients ensure the human side of technology change is secured professionally and effectively.

New technologies have caused great changes in how organisations work and communicate. Yet, so often the effects on staff are ignored - it is no surprise more than 75% of technology investments fail to deliver their expected value. We concentrate also on ways of communicating change and knowledge exchange

Intranet Usability Evaluation

Through best practice user centred design and approaches, TEG provides evidence and recommendations for improving your intranet. Our tools include:

  • Expert evaluation (Case Study)
  • User testing (face to face) (Case Study)
  • User testing (software based)
  • User Workshops (Listening Labs)
  • Traditional qualitative and quantitative approaches

Our distinct competitive advantage in this area is our expertise in organisational communication and knowledge management - absent in other web - and product focused usability service providers.

Intranets have great potential, but often fail to deliver their promised benefits. Sites don't specifically cater to the real needs of the end user and even killer content goes unused if it is too hard to access.

Intranet Site Developers' Module

Within overall intranet sites, there are specific sites for functions and services. It is important to develop these consistently in line with user centred design.

  • We conduct workshop modules (Case Study) with site development teams (programmers, designers, project managers) to enhance understanding of the value of user centred design and usability based approaches.
  • This enables teams to plan the key issues around site structure and processes. While this does not mean your team will be able to perform user testing, you will see improvements in user based site perspectives.

Intranet Contributor Development Module

Getting the site right is only part of the battle - Content is still King. Even the best designed site with great architecture will not be used if the content is not effective and valuable.

Making your content - whether it is news, transactional forms, processes, manuals or data - easy to digest and use is difficult. In addition to handling operational aspects of this work, TEG can also deliver one day contributor modules (case study) and master classes (link to IBF Master Classes) to help participants:

  • Better manage content – identification and editing
  • Create more effective content - writing and organising information for the web, search engines and document management technology
  • Decide when (and if) to update content

Inter Departmental Benchmarking

We provide management with a way to evaluate how each part of the overall intranet is delivering improvement using agreed metrics comparing, for example, how HR, Marketing, IT and R&D intranet sites are performing quarterly. This quantifies where your intranet spend is delivering (and where it isn’t).

Intranet Benchmarking

We have been instrumental in setting up the successful Intranet Benchmarking Forum (IBF) and we have a unique body of comparative data to rate and benchmark organisational intranets and portals.

Virtual Team Working

The need for people who work in different locations to meet has risen dramatically in recent years. Business costs are enormous:

  • travel
  • lost time
  • accommodation
  • human wear and tear
  • increased risk, health and safety factors

Technology alone is not the answer - despite what video conferencing purports to deliver. Our work with partners such as the Open University has provided leading practice in helping set protocols, approaches and behaviour for more effective virtual working methods.

E-Culture Sessions

You have invested in IT, but people are just not changing how they do things. Sound familiar? It is time to engage people in thinking about and trying out different approaches to working with new technologies.

Our E-Culture Sessions are interactive, fun and practical, putting people at ease with technology and letting them determine better ways to work with it to become more effective.

Mobile Organisational Communications

TEG can help you think up and implement innovative ways to communicate more effectively with your people using mobile technologies.

We have developed some innovative approaches to use Pocket PCs - these are rapidly approaching mainstream application in mobile workforces, including mobile intranet.

Technology Strategy

Not every technology decision is as broad as new core systems or SAP. TEG has advised clients on regional implementations of intranets (Case Study) and other technologies using simple evaluations and executive workshops to help shape decisions.

Communicating Change

Managing business critical stakeholder communication

Change Communication - Mass Engagement
Face to Face - Small and Large Scale
Interactive Worksheets and Learning Tools
Integrating Face to Face and Digital Communication

Over the past few years, internal communication practice has developed fast. Yet while our competitors are becoming familiar with new approaches, we have already used them. This proven leading edge gives a competitive advantage to our clients since, we can deploy such approaches quickly and effectively.

Change Communication - Mass Engagement

It would be great if senior managers could "flick a switch" and have everyone in the company adopt the proposed new structure or desired change?

While no one can deliver that, we can involve high numbers of people rapidly in large scale change. We have been enabling organisations to deliver such accelerated change communication and engagement for many years through our co development process and by empowering managers to become change ambassadors with tangible communication support.

Face to Face - Small and Large Scale

TEG has expanded considerably in digital communication, but we have never forgotten the importance of face to face communication. We always highlight engagement led approaches to help managers communicate with their teams. We optimise face to face communication (whether for a small team or thousands at a "stop the company for a day" event) by ensuring time is spent efficiently, using the latest face to face communication aids such as learning tools, scenario maps, open space technology and real time strategic change.

Interactive Worksheets and Learning Tools

We always aim to turn one way communication into an interactive process. For this, we use large worksheet and learning tool graphics that communicate messages and initiate conversations among employees. We have refined this approach, developed in Sweden in the early 1980s, to construct interactive games, competitor scenarios and timelines.

Integrating Face to Face and Digital Communication

Change communication projects demand alignment between online and offline communication. Our technology services allow us to evaluate which channels suit which purposes and to challenge preconceptions about the relationship between face to face communication, trust building and engagement.

For example, facilitating a global gathering of managers over several days, we shape the personal communication tools used and also build in “before and after” digital communication, along with daily knowledge sharing and documenting.

Knowledge Exchange

Improving knowledge sharing by improving processes and behaviours

Implementing KM Practice
Introducing KM

Technology is a great enabler for sharing knowledge, but organisational culture and individual behaviour actually spread the word. TEG specialises in helping improve understanding of the value of knowledge sharing, creating processes to make it happen, engaging people in it and producing knowledge content that delivers real value.

For more, read "Mobilising the Power of What You Know", written by TEG Managing Director Paul Miller

Knowledge content gathering

The key to strong Knowledge Management (KM) is compelling content. TEG has considerable experience in systematically assembling knowledge content for sharing across organisations. We apply a proven, audience focused process that clients (and others) regard as best practice in the KM industry. We combine change management, KM experience and creative delivery skills to forge powerful knowledge tools.

back to Knowledge Exchange

Knowledge Assets

One successful approach is to identify specific candidates to develop as Knowledge Assets. This method relates directly to the client’s business. For FMCG companies, assets are typically brand or seasonal event based. In energy companies, assets hinge around large scale business activities such as country start ups, safety practice or exploration skills. This approach defines the knowledge area, making it practical and tangible.

Implementing KM Practice

Here we focus more on the culture and technology side of KM than on content. We work with client teams to decide KM strategy and activities that build on corporate habits, not try to overcome them. For example, in a competitive internal environment, it is better to engineer that competition to promote KM work than to rely on altruism.

Introducing KM

For companies wanting to embark on KM activity, but wary of investing large resources in grand plans, we offer short life interventions based on KM best practice and experience. Typically, these will use existing client technology, focusing on practical tools and behaviour building systems. We always aim to help you avoid unnecessary activities and cost.
